Two U.S. presidential candidates, Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris and her Republican opponent, former President Donald Trump, have never met or talked to each other, but they are at odds over the parameters of their first face-to-face debate on September 10. When the two camps agreed to the 90-minute nationally broadcast discussion on ABC News in the eastern city of Philadelphia, it was on the same circumstances that Trump confronted President Joe Biden in late June, with microphones muffled when the other candidate was speaking.

Two US presidential candidates, Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris and her Republican opponent, former President Donald Trump, have never met or spoken, but they disagree on the limits of their first face-to-face debate, scheduled for September 10. When the two campaigns agreed to the 90-minute nationally broadcast conversation on ABC News in the eastern city of Philadelphia, it was under the same conditions that Trump addressed President Joe Biden in late June, with microphones muffled when the opposing candidate spoke.

Brian Fallon, a Harris campaign spokesman, stated that “Trump’s handlers prefer the muted microphone because they don’t think their candidate can act presidential for 90 minutes on his own.” He stated that Harris is “prepared to deal with Trump’s constant lies and interruptions in real time.” Trump should not hide behind the mute button. Trump appeared to hint that it made no difference to him, telling reporters Monday, “We committed to the same regulations. I don’t know; it doesn’t matter to me. The deal was that everything would be the same as the last time. “In that case, it was muted.” “The truth is they’re trying to get out of it,” Trump said of the Harris campaign.

Trump intimated in a Sunday evening post on his Truth Social platform that he would not attend the ABC debate. Trump expressed his dissatisfaction with the network’s Sunday news talk show featuring a “so-called Panel of Trump Haters” and rhetorically asked, “Why would I do the debate against Kamala Harris on that network?” He encouraged followers to “Stay tuned!!” The June 27 Trump-Biden debate was significant in the 2024 presidential race. The 81-year-old Biden faltered so terribly, losing his train of thought and failing to directly challenge Trump, that Democratic friends in Congress urged him to abandon his reelection campaign. He withdrew on July 21 and endorsed Harris, and senior Democratic officials soon embraced her campaign.

Harris and Trump have never met or spoken on the phone, despite their frequent political jabs. Harris attended Trump’s State of the Union addresses in the enormous House of Representatives chamber, but sat away from the podium where he spoke. Most past televised presidential debates had unmuted microphones for both major-party candidates. If Harris gets her way and microphones remain unmuted during the discussion, the chances of peaceful conversations between the two contenders are likely to decline. The microphones were unmuted during Trump and Biden’s first debate in 2020, and the two candidates repeatedly interrupted and talked over each other’s speeches. Political commentators described the interaction as Disaster, one of the worst presidential debates in history.

Disaster, one of the worst presidential debates ever.
