Former Democratic President Jimmy Carter, a Plains native, turned 100 on Tuesday. Carter, the 39th president of the United States, is the oldest living president and the longest-serving president in US history. Two days before his birthday, current President Joe Biden wished the Georgia native well.
“Mr. President, you’ve always been a moral force for a nation and the world,” Biden remarked during an appearance on CBS Sunday Morning. “… You’re a voice of courage, conviction, compassion, and most of all a beloved friend of (First Lady) Jill (Biden) and me and our family.”
He also served as Georgia’s governor from 1971 to 1975, a member of the state Senate from 1963 to 1967, and a member of the United States Navy. Rosalynn Carter, Carter’s wife and former First Lady, died in November at the age of 96. According to his family, Jimmy Carter was admitted to hospice care in Plains in February 2023. Carter has remained politically active even at the age of 99 and in hospice care. His grandson, Jason Carter, stated at the Democratic National Convention that Jimmy Carter was enthusiastic about the opportunity to vote for Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election.
For his birthday, there will be a charity performance and an initiative to build 30 homes in his name.
