Iran has denied involvement in an alleged plot to assassinate President-elect Donald Trump, after the US Justice Department indicted a man in connection with the plan.
According to FBI papers, an alleged Iranian official directed a US contact to organize President Trump’s assassination in September. The US Justice Department has now filed criminal charges against three people who were allegedly involved in the attempt. However, Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baghaei, has stated that the claims are “totally unfounded”. He noted that similar charges about assassinating US presidents had previously been made, which Iran disputed and shown to be incorrect.

In a statement, Mr Baghaei noted that the claims risk “further complicating the issues between the US and Iran”. The FBI has released images of firearms that it claims were discovered on the cloud accounts of the three individuals indicted in an alleged conspiracy to kill a US citizen of Iranian heritage.

According to Kevin Rojek, the director of the FBI field office in Pittsburgh, Crooks “engaged in detailed attack planning” after becoming “hyper-focused” on the Butler event.
