Trump threatens 100% tariff on BRICS nations in case of dollar replacement

US President-elect Donald Trump warned nations on Saturday that any BRICS country attempting to move away from the US dollar in international trade would face a 100% tariff. Referring to the economic alliance of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—now expanded to include Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates, “The idea that the BRICS Countries are trying to move away from the Dollar while we stand by and watch is OVER,” Trump wrote on Truth Social regarding the alliance, which includes Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates.

Trump requested that they commit to using the dollar as their reserve currency and not create a new BRICS currency or support alternatives. “We require a commitment from these Countries that they will neither create a new BRICS Currency, nor back any other Currency to replace the mighty US Dollar or, they will face 100% Tariffs, and should expect to say goodbye to selling into the wonderful US Economy,” warned Mr. Trump. In recent years, the BRICS have considered moving away from the dollar, with talks accelerating when the US imposed sanctions on Russia in 2022 in response to its “special military operation” in Ukraine. “There is no way that the BRICS will replace the US dollar in international trade, and any country that attempts should wave farewell to America,” he said

The latest threat comes in response to Trump’s ideas to curb illegal migration and drug trafficking into the United States, which include a 25% tariff on Mexico and Canada and an additional 10% on China. A representative for Trump’s transition team did not immediately reply to queries for clarity on tariff specifics for BRICS countries or China.
