The NFL announced on Tuesday that Houston Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair was suspended for three games after hitting Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence in the head on Sunday. According to ESPN, Jon Runyan, the NFL’s vice president of football operations, stated that Al-Shaair’s hefty sentence was also due to his frequent infractions of the league’s player safety guidelines. Al-Shaair struck Lawrence’s face mask while he was tumbling to the ground in the second quarter. It resulted in a concussion for the Jaguars’ quarterback. Following the incident, Al-Shaair was ejected. The Texans won the game 23-20, improving to 8-5. Runyan named Al-Shaairs hit unacceptable.

“You led with your forearm and helmet and delivered a forceful blow to your opponent’s head/neck area when you had time and space to avoid such contact,” said the NFL official in his letter to the 27-year-old linebacker. Last week, Al-Shaair was penalized more than $11,000 for punching Tennessee Titans running back Tony Pollard. In Week 2, he received a similar fine for punching Chicago Bears running back Roschon Johnson. Al-Shaair signed a three-year, $34 million contract with the Texans this season.

In addressing the undrafted linebacker, Runyan stated that the NFL will never tolerate acts of aggression. “Your lack of sportsmanship and respect for the game of football and all those who play, coach, and enjoy watching it, is troubling and does not reflect the core values of the NFL,” according to Runyan. “Your continuous contempt for NFL playing rules jeopardizes the health and safety of both you and your opponents.

Al-Shaair is eligible to return for the Texans’ final regular season game against the Titans.
