President Donald Trump has stated that he would like Jordan and Egypt to shelter Palestinian refugees from Gaza in order to “just clean out” the enclave, which he refers to as a “demolition site.” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Saturday, “You’re talking about probably a million and a half people, and we just clean out that whole thing and say, ‘You know, it’s over.'” Last year, the Biden administration opposed forcibly removing Palestinians from Gaza or the occupied West Bank. Trump said he spoke with Jordan’s King Abdullah II earlier in the day, thanking him on hosting a large number of Palestinian refugees and expressing a desire for Jordan and Egypt to accept additional people. “Almost everything is destroyed, Almost everything’s demolished, and people are dying there. So I’d rather get involved with some of the Arab nations and build housing at a different location where they can maybe live in peace,” he said.
Trump said the relocation of the population could be temporary or long-term. His latest comments come during a fragile ceasefire in Gaza that has brought the release of seven Israeli hostages in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails and a surge of humanitarian aid to the battered enclave.
Here is what else to know. Trump told reporters that his government has lifted the Biden administration’s ban on supplying Israel with 2,000-pound bombs. They had been stopped amid worries over the rising scale of civilian casualties in Gaza. “They’ve been waiting for them for a long time,” Trump said. According to the Palestinian Health Ministry in Ramallah, a 2-year-old girl was shot in the head and killed by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank city of Jenin. The Israel Defense Forces said its troops fired at a building targeting militants. “The IDF is aware of claims that noncombatants were harmed as a result of the gunfire. The incident is under review,” it said.
