NFL rumors: Insider predicts Philadelphia Eagles will reunite Vic Fangio with young edge rusher if Josh Sweat leaves

The Philadelphia Eagles have had a busy offseason after winning their second Super Bowl in franchise history. They honored Offensive Player of the Year Saquon Barkley with a record-breaking contract extension just one year into his agreement, making him the first running back to earn $20 million each year after his historic 2024 season. The Birds also signed All-Pro Zack Baun to a three-year, $51 million contract following his breakout season as one of the league’s best off-ball linebackers in Vic Fangio’s defensive system.

However, important defensive gaps still need to be filled. Both edge rusher Josh Sweat and young defensive tackle Milton Williams are pursuing free agency and may cost Philadelphia too much money. With only $21.9 million in cap space, according to OverTheCap.com, Howie Roseman faces difficult decisions. If Sweat bolts as planned, they will have to find a replacement on the edge. That’s why one NFL insider believes the Eagles would target a young pass rusher with ties to their defensive coach.

The Eagles have some of the greatest interior lineman in the league, but with Josh Sweat about to go in free agency, they need to add additional depth off the edge. Howie Roseman could go to the draft and free agency to fill needs in this situation. Browning is a young player (26) who has a relationship with Vic Fangio, having played for the Eagles’ defensive coordinator when Fangio was the head coach in Denver,” Jones said. Browning, the Broncos’ 2021 third-round draft pick, was traded to the Arizona Cardinals at last season’s deadline. In 13 games divided between Denver and Arizona, he recorded only two sacks, 21 total tackles, five tackles for loss, and three quarterback hits.

Those numbers may not stand out, but neither did Baun’s when he signed his one-year contract after joining the New Orleans Saints. In four NFL seasons, Browning has 11.5 sacks, 128 total tackles, 19 tackles for loss, 25 quarterback hits, one interception, and two forced fumbles. While he lacks top production, his familiarity with Fangio may make him the latest reclamation project to prosper in Philadelphia’s defensive scheme.
