European countries pledged billions of dollars to support Ukraine’s fight against Russia’s invasion, while a US envoy met with Russian President Vladimir Putin amid concerns about the Kremlin’s willingness to end the three-year war. British Defense Secretary John Healey chaired a meeting of Ukraine’s Western backers in Brussels.
Healey did not provide a breakdown of that sum, and Ukraine has previously complained that some countries repeat old commitments at such pledging conferences or fail to deliver actual weaponry and ammunition worth the money promised.
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte stated last week that Ukraine’s supporters have contributed approximately $21 billion in the first three months of this year. Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s foreign policy leader, announced Friday that more than $26 billion had been committed. Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that US President Donald Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, was in Russia and will meet with Putin in St. Petersburg. According to footage obtained by Russian media, Witkoff, who has been pressuring the Kremlin to approve a truce, first met with Putin envoy Kirill Dmitriev.
Prior to the “contact group” meeting at NATO headquarters, Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov stated that upgrading his country’s air defenses was a priority. Standing alongside Healey at the conclusion, Umerov hailed the discussion as “productive, effective, and efficient,” resulting in “one of the largest” packages of help Ukraine has gotten. “We’re thankful to each nation that has provided this support,” added Mr. Putin.
