ISTANBUL US President Donald Trump said late Saturday that his team had a “very good meeting” on trade with Chinese officials in Switzerland. He said a “total reset” of US-China relations had occurred. “We had a very productive meeting with China today in Switzerland. Many things were addressed and agreed upon. A total reset was agreed in a courteous yet constructive manner. We want to see China open up to American industry, for the benefit of both countries. “GREAT PROGRESS MADE!!!” Trump posted on Truth Social. The first day of trade talks in Geneva ended, with discussions scheduled to resume on Sunday, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The discussion, which began at 10 a.m. local time (0800GMT) and included a lunch break, ended at 8 p.m., after at least eight hours, according to the newspaper. There were no follow-up announcements, and no information on the content or tone of the discussions was made public. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer led the US delegation, while Vice Premier He Lifeng led China’s. The talks came amid efforts to defuse trade tensions following a rapid escalation earlier this year, when the United States levied tariffs of up to 145% on Chinese imports. Beijing reacted with retaliatory tariffs of up to 125% on specific American imports. Trump stated an 80% tariff on Chinese imports “looks right,” before the meeting. The White House emphasized that Trump’s team has his full backing to secure “the best deal possible for America.”
