Derrick Henry signs a record-breaking contract extension with the Baltimore Ravens

For running backs in the NFL, turning 30 usually signals the end of their career. Derrick Henry sees age as nothing more than a number. The 31-year-old recently had a great season with the Baltimore Ravens. Henry broke the NFL record for most rushing yards by a running back over the age of thirty. He finished second in the NFL in rushing yards behind Saquon Barkley, with 1,921 and 16 touchdowns. Henry became the first NFL player to amass at least 1900 rushing yards in two consecutive seasons.

“You have undoubtedly been my greatest teacher,” Kevin wrote. “A role frequently filled by a father figure. You taught me wonderful characteristics such as respect and kindness. Humor and wit.

Henry is no stranger to creating NFL history. It’s only fitting that he’d sign the largest contract ever for a running back beyond the age of 30. The Ravens obviously believe Henry still has a lot of tread left on his tires. He’ll turn 32 during the 2025 NFL season. Most running backs would be nearing the end of their careers by now, but Henry looked better than ever in 2024.

He and Lamar Jackson will return to Baltimore’s backfield, trying to finally reach the playoffs next season.

Derrick Henry may finish next season in the top ten in career NFL rushing yards.

Henry has 11,423 career running yards heading into the 2025 season. He has already established himself as a future Hall of Famer. The only thing left is to see how far he can advance on the career rushing rankings. Henry is currently ranked No. 19. He’s only 272 yards away from passing Fred Taylor for No. 17 on the all-time record. Henry is 1577 yards away from reaching 13,000 career rushing yards. If he does that next season, he will move up to No. 10 on the all-time running list, overtaking legends such as Marcus Allen, Marshall Faulk, Jim Brown, and Tony Dorsett.

Henry will probably not catch Emmitt Smith for the NFL’s all-time rushing record, but denying Henry’s greatness is a fool’s game. But, with excellent health, he should continue to ascend the list and possibly finish in the top five.
