The Kansas City Chiefs have made it their mission to spoil everyone’s Christmases from now on. According to Nate Taylor and Daniel Popper of The Athletic, “When it comes to domestic stand-alone games, the Chiefs have requested that the NFL make them a fixture on Christmas Day,” citing a league source. The Chiefs, who have played on Christmas Day for the past two seasons, hope to become a Thanksgiving Day staple, like the Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys.” Given how much people dislike the Chiefs these days, the rest of the NFL would not be happy about this. As stated in the blurb, the Chefs have already become accustomed to playing on Christmas Day, having played on it the past two years (losing to the Raiders in 2023 and winning against the Steelers this past year).
Chiefs want to be a “fixture on Christmas Day”. Chiefs supporters may not be thrilled with this proposal. Christmas is a day spent with family, and it’s pleasant not to have to worry about anything, which is the complete opposite of what Chiefs games provide for supporters. With almost every game coming down to the wire, dealing with it on a vacation every year sounds less than ideal for Chiefs Kingdom. However, the Chiefs are currently the dominant force in the NFL, so it would not be shocking if their demand was granted here. They may become a regular on Christmas Day, just as the Lions and Cowboys are on Thanksgiving.
The difference between playing on Christmas and Thanksgiving is that Christmas changes whatever day of the week it falls on each year, which can make scheduling difficult. For example, this past season, the Chiefs had to play on a Wednesday and compensated by playing on a Saturday, but the turnaround was still the same as a Sunday to Thursday game.
I could see both sides of the Christmas Day situation. On the one hand, it would be enjoyable to spend time with family and friends while watching our favorite team. On the other hand, it could be wonderful to enjoy the Christmas celebrations without having to watch K.C. hold off their opponent until the last few minutes.
The haters will undoubtedly object to having to watch the Chiefs on Christmas Day every year, which is fairly humorous to think about. Will they be Grinches or holly happy when this choice is finalized?
