Cooper Flagg and No. 2 Duke continued their blitz of the ACC on Saturday night, bloodied and disoriented but not defeated. Despite missing the final 11 minutes of the first half after getting smacked in the eye, Flagg scored 16 points as the Blue Devils defeated Florida State 100-65 at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Flagg, a 6-9 freshman forward who leads Duke in scoring and rebounds, was smacked in the face twice in the first half and had to sit out. The first time he got a cut under his nose. He was smacked in the eye for the second time with 11:27 remaining in the half. He didn’t return until the second half.
Flagg scored four points in a shortened first half before playing 13 minutes after intermission and adding 12 more. Duke handily defeated Florida State (16-13, 7-11 ACC), despite their standout freshman losing playing time due to his teammates. Isaiah Evans, a freshman, led Duke with 19 points, while Kon Knueppel and Khaman Maluach both
The Blue Devils shot 43.8%, but only committed four turnovers, tying their season low. Florida State scored 38.6%.
New lineup, same results. For the first time since late November, the Blue Devils used a different starting lineup. Evans joined Flagg, Knueppel, Sion James, and Maluach in the starting lineup after Proctor was out. This is Evans’ first career start. In Duke’s previous 21 games, Proctor started alongside Flagg, Knueppel, James, and Maluach. The Blue Devils were 20-1.
Proctor had started Duke’s first 28 games this season and 37 in a row dating back to last season, but he was not in uniform against Florida State. Saturday night’s lineup was Duke’s third different starting five this season.
Odd combos in the first half: Duke led by 17 points at halftime despite shooting 38.1%. Due to the absence of Proctor, Brown, and Flagg, it accomplished this with uncommon five-man units. Darren Harris, a freshman forward who had only appeared in 17 games and averaged 5.6 minutes per game this season, played 5:12 of the first half.
Despite all of this, Duke had no turnovers in the first half and controlled the rebounding war, 26-21. Mason Gillis, who averages 4.4 points per game, led the Blue Devils with nine points in the first half.
Dominant Duke rebounding The Blue Devils finished with 49 rebounds, while Florida State had 32. This featured a season-high 21 offensive rebounds, which helped Duke take a 17-5 lead in second-chance points.
Maluach finished with a double-double, including a team-high 10 rebounds. Flagg and James both finished with six rebounds, while every Duke player who saw action throughout the game’s first 30 minutes had at least one rebound.
