Conservative CNN pundit Scott Jennings said Friday that he will join the Los Angeles Times editorial board, after the owner’s daily announced plans to employ more conservative voices.

Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, the owner of the Los Angeles Times, indicated earlier this month that he hoped to balance out his newspaper’s editorial section by employing more Republicans, and mentioned Jennings as one of the voices he wanted to bring on board. Soon-Shiong previously stated that newspaper editorial boards are responsible for assigning stories, which can be biased due to the editor’s own views. Jennings lauded Soon-Siong for his “important and groundbreaking” objective of reinstating impartiality and balance to the renowned newspaper, and said he has contributed to the paper in recent years.

“I’ve written columns for the paper in recent years and felt honoured to do so under such a storied and important masthead,” Jennings wrote on X. “I enjoy newspapers and believe in quality journalism and opinion pages that reflect a diverse range of perspectives. I approach my commentary duties by first telling the facts and then offering my honest view based on my conservative principles and experience.” As a paid commentator to CNN, Jennings was a star during this election cycle, frequently being the lone conservative amid more liberal competitors in intense political panel debates. Jennings stated that the shakeup at the newspaper, the largest daily in liberal-leaning California, followed management’s decision to withhold an endorsement in the presidential election – a big step in fixing the problems facing legacy media.

Roughly half (or more) of the population frequently believes the legacy media does not care what it thinks and has little interest in fairly expressing its ideas and values,” Jennings said. “I plan to represent those Americans who believe they are often ignored or even ridiculed in legacy media and applaud Dr Soon-Shiong’s move to bring balance to the editorial board.” Other news organizations, including the Washington Post, have attempted to restore impartiality and balance to their publications. Last month, Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos wrote an op-ed about the public’s skepticism of the news media. “”Now more than ever the world needs a credible, trusted, independent voice, and where better for that voice to originate than the capital city of the most important country in the world?” Bezos wrote. “To win this war, we’ll have to work out new muscles. Some modifications will be a return to the past, while others may involve new technologies… None of this will be simple, but the effort will be worthwhile.
