EU extends Ukraine-related Russia sanctions after Hungary’s approval

After weeks of deliberation, Hungary has agreed to prolong the European Union’s sanctions against Russia over the Ukraine conflict. “The EU’s foreign ministers have now agreed to renew sanctions on Russia. This will continue to deny Moscow of revenue to fund its war,” the bloc’s foreign affairs chief, Kaja Kallas, wrote on X Monday. The EU’s 27 member states must agree unanimously to renew the penalties every six months, with the next deadline looming on January 31.

Hungary, one of the EU’s friendliest countries to Russia, had angered other member states by refusing to approve the latest roll-over. Budapest first stated that it wished to wait until the inauguration of new US President Donald Trump before signing off. Following that, Prime Minister Viktor Orban requested that Brussels press Ukraine to reactivate a gas pipeline connecting Central Europe. To appease Budapest, the European Commission issued a statement suggesting it was open to include Hungary and Slovakia in negotiations with Kiev about gas supply to Europe.

The EU executive further stated that it will “approach Ukraine to request assurances regarding the maintenance of oil pipeline transfers to the EU.” “Hungary has received the guarantees it requested regarding our country’s energy security,” Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto stated in an online statement.
