EU takes away Hungary’s right to host ministerial meet over its stance on Ukraine

Following prime minister Viktor Orban’s “peace mission” trips to Beijing and Moscow, which sparked anger from the union for compromising their backing of Ukraine, the EU has stripped Hungary of its permission to host an important meeting.

The Gymnich was scheduled to take place in late August and was to be hosted by Hungary, which is presently the rotating EU chair.

Josep Borrell, the head of EU foreign affairs, announced on Monday that the meeting of defense and foreign ministers will now take place in September in Brussels, the headquarters of the EU.

“Even if it’s just a symbolic signal, we have to send something,” he declared.

While there was general condemnation of Hungary’s recent actions, Mr. Borrell noted that there remained division among EU member states over attendance at the meeting in Budapest.

The EU decision was condemned as “childish” by Hungary.

Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto remarked, “I really don’t want to offend anyone but it is probably a kindergarten-level debate.”

A “concerted, hysterical, often mocking series of attacks” on Mr. Orban’s recent meetings with Chinese President Xi Jingping and Russian President Vladimir Putin were denounced by him.

Only a few days after his nation assumed the rotating chair of the EU on July 1st, Mr. Orban started his “peace missions,” which included a visit to US presidential contender Donald Trump.

Hungary is perceived by a number of EU members as being too close to Moscow, hurting the bloc’s attempts to diplomatically and politically isolate Russia.

Hungary has objected to both the EU’s sanctions on Russia and the significant arms financing given to Ukraine.

Budapest claims to be working to quickly restore peace to Ukraine. On Monday, Mr. Borrell took offense, claiming that Budapest, not the EU, ought to be calling Mr. Putin a “pro-war” figure.

“If you want to talk about the war party, talk about Putin,” he stated.

Radoslaw Sikorski, the foreign minister of Poland, stated that Hungary voted against his plan to hold the meeting of foreign ministers in Ukraine.

“Helping Ukraine by defeating Putin is the right thing to do,” stated Mr. Sikorski in the past.

Several EU politicians, including French President Emmanuel Macron and Mr. Borrell’s appointed successor Kaja Kallas, who has even gone so far as to call for Russia to be broken up, share his opinion.

Concurrently, Dmytro Kuleba, the foreign minister of Ukraine, traveled to China, which is seen as Russia’s principal supporter, for peace negotiations.

The Chinese Communist Party sent an invitation to Mr. Kuleba, who is scheduled to meet with Wang Yi, his counterpart in China.

“As your foreign minister, this will be my first bilateral visit to your nation,” stated Me Kuleba. “We will talk about important issues like reestablishing peace, strengthening our bilateral communication, and advancing trade and economic cooperation.”

“If we work together, we can accomplish a lot.”
