(Image: Getty) Graeme Souness ‘would not be surprised’ if Real Madrid launched a sensational £150 million approach for Chelsea striker Cole Palmer. Palmer was one of the greatest players in the Premier League last season and has continued his impressive form this season, scoring six goals and assisting five times in seven games. The 22-year-old had more goal involvements than any other Premier League player last season, and his performance earned him the Young Player of the Season accolade. Already on a seven-year term following his £40 million arrival from Manchester City, Palmer signed a contract extension at Stamford Bridge in August, thus keeping him at the club until summer of 2033
I’m sure there are other players that Man City could have cashed in on. Souness informed the Daily Mail. ‘Chelsea paid £40 million for Palmer, but if Real Madrid come calling next summer and he continues to perform at his current level, I wouldn’t be surprised if they received a £150 million bid for him.
He’s a young man, so we’re going early on this call, but if this is Palmer’s level and he can keep it up, he’ll be a top man. ‘He possesses silky skills, athleticism, and an excellent football intellect. There is nothing to hate about him. He’s 22. At that age, no one should be that good. I also enjoy his demeanour. Palmer’s reaction when he scores tells you a lot about him, and he doesn’t lose his cool when he does. ‘He appears to have a great sensible head and a really strong football education, which you would expect at the current Manchester City.’
Palmer’s goal contributions this season have been mostly assists, although he became the first player in Premier League history to score four first-half goals in a 4-2 win over Brighton at the end of last month. After Palmer’s four-goal performance, Manchester United and England icon Gary Neville said he was ‘totally astonished’ by the Chelsea star. When asked if he thought Palmer was the best player in the Premier League, Neville replied, ‘He’s not far off! I have to admit that I was astonished last season.
‘I remember Mohamed Salah scoring those goals all those years ago and thinking, “He won’t repeat that in the second season, he won’t repeat that in the third season,” and Cole Palmer is just utterly astonishing me with what he’s giving.
The visitors, who were down to ten men late on, took the lead just after halftime through Chris Wood, before Noni Madueke levelled for Chelsea. Following the draw, which left Chelsea fourth in the Premier League heading into the international break, Blues manager Enzo Maresca stated: “I believe we deserved to win.” “They are a really excellent team, and we were confident they would defend well. It was a difficult and challenging game, totally different from Brighton. We were patient with the ball and created opportunities. ‘Overall, the performance was good, and I believe we deserved to win. Their keeper was the finest in the game. We generated chances and reached the goal in the style we wanted.
