According to the NHC, some additional strengthening may occur today before gradual weakening begins early next week. The agency is also monitoring Tropical Storm Nadine, which is 20 miles west-northwest of Belize City and 65 miles southwest of Chetumal, Mexico, as of 2 p.m. EDT.

Two new tropical storms were designated Saturday, one of which soon turned into a hurricane, as the deadly 2024 storm season continued to rage throughout the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Gulf of Mexico. Oscar was first classified as a tropical storm early Saturday and was upgraded to a hurricane by mid-afternoon by the National Hurricane Centre, with maximum sustained winds of 80 mph. It was moving westerly at 12 mph and was 160 miles east-southeast of the southeastern Bahamas. The government of the Bahamas has issued a hurricane warning for the Turks and Caicos Islands and the southeastern Bahamas. Meanwhile, the Cuban government has issued a hurricane notice for the provinces of Guantanamo, Holguin, and Las Tuna.

Nadine had maximum sustained winds of 50 mph and was travelling west at 8 mph. Nadine has the potential to bring localized flash floods and has issued storm warnings along the beaches of Belize and Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. The NHC believes Nadine has a 90% chance of improvement

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration anticipated 17 to 24 named storms for the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season, with four categorized as significant hurricanes of at least Category 3, which have sustained winds of 111 to 130 mph. So far, 13 named storms have formed, with nine turning into hurricanes and four becoming major hurricanes. The four big storms include Hurricane Helene, which made landfall in Florida on September 26th, and Hurricane Milton, which made landfall on October 9

Both storms produced enormous damage and fatalities, with Helene destroying most of the southeastern United States and Milton traversing Florida from west to east
