Since the Israel-Gaza war began with surprise strikes on Israel by the Palestinian militant group Hamas a year ago, it has evolved into a multidimensional conflict that has spread to Lebanon and Yemen. Since being assaulted by Iranian missiles last Tuesday, Israel has explored air strikes on not only Iranian petroleum infrastructure systems, but also nuclear sites, exerting significant global influence. For example, oil prices rose at the fastest weekly rate in two years.
Israel is continuing its full-fledged onslaught on Lebanon, including Beirut, the capital city where the pro-Iranian Lebanese armed group Hezbollah has a foothold. Hashem Safieddine, a probable successor to Hassan Nasrallah, who was murdered by Israeli bombs on September 27, has been out of contact since Friday, raising suspicions that he is dead. Hezbollah stated on Sunday that it killed more than 25 Israeli troops in a combat, while at least 24 Gazans were killed by Israeli airstrikes on the same day.
Over the last year, the continuous war has killed around 42,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and about 1,200 in Israel. Around 2,000 people have died as a result of Israel’s recent bombings in Lebanon.
