Rutte confirmed his desire to compete for NATO Secretary General in October 2023. He received support from the governments of the United States, Britain, Germany, and France. He then overcame the positions of Turkey, Hungary, Slovakia, and Romania. His final opponent, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, withdrew from the race in June.
