Subomi Okoya, the son of billionaire businessman Razaq Okoya, has publicly apologized to the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and Nigerians following anger over a viral video of him and his brother, Wahab, showering naira notes. In the footage, a police officer accompanying them is seen holding stacks of money. The act breaches Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act of 2007, which forbids the abuse of the national currency. Spraying or mishandling naira notes is criminal by Nigerian law.

Following the video’s release, the NPF declared on Friday via its official X (previously Twitter) feed that the officer involved had been identified and held for disciplinary action. “The policeman captured in the recent viral video shared by the sons of Lagos businessman Chief Okoya, where they were abusing the naira, has been identified and detained for disciplinary action,” the National Police Force (NPF) announced.

The police described the officer’s involvement as unethical and against to the force’s ideals, confirming their commitment to upholding professionalism and integrity.

Amid popular uproar, Subomi resorted to his X account to express sorrow, saying: His words: “To the Nigerian people, I did not mean to cause any trouble or harm. My goals were innocent and naive. “I ask for your pardon and support because I had no intention of causing such a concern. “I was not fully aware of the consequences of my actions.”
