Police detained seven people on Sunday for participating in an unauthorized demonstration in central Amsterdam following violence against Israeli soccer supporters, according to a Dutch station. Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema prohibited all demonstrations over the weekend in response to the horrific scenes of youngsters on scooters and on foot abusing Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters on Thursday and Friday, in what was widely criticized as a violent outburst of antisemitism in the Dutch capital. Israel’s envoy to the Netherlands reported that 2,000 Israelis were flown home on special planes from Amsterdam in recent days. The attacks, which left five Israeli soccer fans hospitalized, occurred as fury over the Gaza conflict grew.

Twenty individuals were apprehended. On X, Amsterdam Municipality announced that police had begun detaining demonstrators who refused to leave the square, which is located in the heart of the city’s main shopping district and near the historic canal network. The protest organizers went to court on Sunday morning, seeking an injunction to allow the rally, but the judge upheld the municipality’s ban. At the hearing, senior Amsterdam police officer Olivier Dutilh stated that there were further occurrences overnight targeting people suspected of being Jewish, including some being ordered out of cabs and others being requested to show their passports to prove their nationality.
