Mrs Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended for six months following charges of inappropriate behavior against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. In an Abuja statement, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, said the Senate leadership’s action against Mrs Akpoti-Uduaghan smacked of desperation to cover up. It urged the Senate to redeem its image and integrity by immediately reinstating Mrs Akpoti-Uduaghan and ensuring an open investigation into the matter.
The party stated, “If Senator Akpabio had nothing to conceal, Nigerians expected him to clear his name. He should clear his name by stepping aside and allowing a fair and neutral investigation into Akpoti-Uduaghan’s claim of sexual harassment, as is customary in parliament. It is a national shame that the Senate President and Chairman of the National Assembly are referenced in a sexual harassment lawsuit, which has tarnished the reputation and integrity of Nigeria’s top legislative body. Ordinarily, in this case, the Senate President requires no prompting to step aside for an impartial investigation to clear his name.
