Mark Lawrenson believes Harry Maguire could have a new lease on life in Ruben Amorim’s preferred 3-4-3 system. Amorim, 39, started his Manchester United career with a 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town over the weekend.

The highly regarded Portuguese coach comes to Old Trafford with a great track record from his tenure with Sporting Lisbon. Amorim used a back three for the majority of his time at Sporting, and Lawrenson believes this might open the door for Maguire, despite United signing two more centre-backs in Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro during the summer transfer window.

“He has to look at each player – and there are a lot of them – but he has to earn results first. “If Harry Maguire plays in the middle of Amorim’s back three, he’ll be OK. He just doesn’t have that half-yard of speed. Ruben Amorim may believe he can put him in the middle with two guys on either side with legs and see how things go.

Unfortunately for Maguire, his stock at Manchester United has declined in recent years. He was even deprived of the club captaincy by Erik ten Hag in the summer of 2023 after losing his spot in the Dutchman’s team.

It was stated at the time that Maguire had the option of leaving Old Trafford, with West Ham making an offer for his services. Maguire remained and went on to gain back his position in the team under Ten Hag, but it was revealed last month prior to the Dutchman’s departure that he had planned to trade the defender in January.

Maguire started United’s first game of the season and has five Premier League appearances this season, though he did not play in Ten Hag’s final match or during Ruud van Nistelrooy’s interim reign. This year, the England centre-half will face even more competition for a starting spot, with De Ligt and Yoro joining Lisandro Martinez, Victor Lindelof, and Jonny Evans.
