Ukraine’s air force recorded 2,286 UAVs launched into its territory between October 1 and November 5, with a daily average of less than 64. The daily number of Russian drones has crossed 100 on three of the seven days since the U.S. presidential election, up from only five occasions in the previous five weeks. On November 10, a record-breaking 145 drones were launched. Russia frequently launches ballistic missiles with its drone barrages, though significantly fewer. LONDON — Russia escalated the intensity of its long-range drone strikes on Ukrainian cities by around 44% in the week following President-elect Donald Trump’s election victory, according to an ABC News analysis. The magnitude and complexity of drone attacks by Russia and Ukraine have rapidly increased since the full-fledged war began in February 2022. Over the previous five weeks, almost 4,500 UAVs have crossed the boundary.

ABC News cannot independently verify the figures provided by any defence ministry. The publicly available totals exclude short-range or reconnaissance drones employed in front-line operations. Both Russia and Ukraine may have reasons to inflate the estimates, and wartime conditions make data difficult to establish.

Nonetheless, the overall tendency is for heavier and more frequent drone barrages. “In the next few months up to Jan. 20, we are expecting a significantly increasing number of launches towards Ukraine,” Ivan Stupak, a former officer in Ukraine’s Security Service, told ABC News. Stupak stated that the number of Russian drone assaults has progressively increased in recent months. August witnessed 818 launches, followed by 1,410 in September and 2,072 in October, he said. According to Stupak, Moscow’s objective is to create as much harm to Ukraine as possible before the change of administration in the United States. Russia’s escalating rate of long-range attacks comes amid its heightened intensity of ground assaults, with fierce fighting persisting in eastern Ukraine and Russia’s western Kursk region—parts of which Kyiv’s forces have occupied.

Both parties have a two-month window to manoeuvre before Trump returns to the White House. During the campaign, Trump promised to stop the war “in 24 hours” by compelling Kyiv and Moscow to negotiate.
