Ohio Senator JD Vance has agreed to debate each other on October 1, setting up a possible vice presidential matchup as early voting begins in many states for the general election. CBS News said on Wednesday on its X feed that it has invited both Vance and Walz to a debate in New York City, with four possible dates—September 17, September 24, October 1, and October 8—as choices.
“See you on October 1, JD.” he reposted from his own campaign account. The Harris-Walz campaign responded with a tweet of its own, stating that Walz “looks forward to debating JD Vance—if he shows up.” Vance confirmed on X that he would accept the October 1 invitation. He also challenged Walz to meet on September 18.
Officials from the Kamala Harris-Walz campaign did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment on Vance’s acceptance of the earlier debate, which he stated would be broadcast on CNN, or whether Walz would participate in it as well. Representatives from CNN verified that Vance accepted the network’s debate.
invitation.
“CBS Evening News” anchor Norah O’Donnell and Margaret Brennan of “Face the Nation” will moderate the Oct. 1 debate, according to the network.
Whether or not Walz and Vance would debate before the Nov. 5 general election had been in question. In just the past several weeks, President Joe Biden left the campaign and Democrats selected Harris to lead their ticket.
Vance has largely kept his focus trained on Harris, whom he would have been set to debate before Biden’s departure from the race. Vance has lobbed critiques against Walz, including questioning the retired Army National Guardsman’s service record.
Former President Donald Trump, the Republican presidential contender, stated that he wanted Vance to debate Walz on CBS, which was discussing various dates for such meeting. The debate is set to take place weeks after Trump and Harris’ top-of-the-ticket discussion on ABC News on September 10.
has stated that he negotiated numerous additional debate dates on three different networks. Fox News has also proposed a discussion between Harris and Trump for September 4, while NBC News plans to show one on September 25.
During an appearance in Michigan, Harris stated that she was “happy to have that conversation” regarding a potential additional debate.
