Victor Wembanyama, frustrated with what he perceives as a lack of foul calls against his opponents, chastised NBA officials after the Los Angeles Clippers defeated the San Antonio Spurs 128-116. “So it’s a hard thing to fight, because it feels unfair sometimes,” Wembanyama told The Associated Press. “But, of course, we discussed it with the staff, and there are some things I need to do to improve myself. First and foremost, stay forceful and avoid bailing out shots, but there is also some work to be done.
“I’m talking to the refs and explaining myself. But it doesn’t feel like something I should be influencing. I’m a basketball player; I’m here to play, and this is why it’s frustrating. It is not my responsibility to engage in political activities.” Wembanyama appeared to lose his composure after a heated exchange with Clippers center Ivica Zubac in the third quarter of Wednesday’s game. Spurs player Harrison Barnes hit a three-pointer moments after Wembanyama stopped Zubac’s attempt, cutting the Clippers’ advantage to 85-78 with 4:45 left in the period. As Barnes sunk the jump shot, Zubac shoved Wembanyama, causing the Spurs star to fall to the floor before swiftly rising and storming at the Clippers big man.
Spurs players, coaches, and officials intervened to deescalate the situation. Zubac was not given a foul. Zubac told reporters that he apologized to Wembanyama following the game.
