Australian Minister Wants SYDNEYNationals Leader David Littleproud to backed away from a proposal to threaten Qantas (QF) and Jetstar (JQ) with break-up powers in response to anti-c
McKenzie emphasised the public’s expectations for safe, on-time flights, timely luggage handling, and reasonable tickets. The Coalition has already enacted comparable divestment powers in the grocery sector, claiming market distortion caused by Coles and Woolworths’ dominance.
McKenzie contended that the mere prospect of breakup powers might effectively manage airline behaviour without requiring a sell-off. However, Littleproud later indicated on Sky News that it was premature to pursue such regulations for airlines, comparing them to the retail industry. Littleproud underlined that the Coalition’s goal is to secure lower airfares through a comprehensive evaluation of competition policy. He emphasised a calm and deliberate approach, pointing out that no actual steps had been done to adopt break-up powers for airlines. The Coalition aims to have the Treasury look at the problem further. Meanwhile, Transport Minister Catherine King rejected McKenzie’s plan as a “thought bubble,” showing the opposition’s lack of unity on the issue.
