Former US President Jimmy Carter has died. According to the Carter Foundation, the 39th President of the United States died on Sunday in Plains, Georgia, accompanied by his family. Carter was a hundred years old. He was in the White House from 1977 to 1981.

Carter is survived by four children, eleven grandchildren, and fourteen great-grandchildren. “My father was a hero – not just for me, but for everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and selfless love,” Carter’s son Chip told the charity. Public memorial services are scheduled in Atlanta and Washington, D.C. Carter lost his re-election attempt in 1980 against Republican Ronald Reagan. Carter received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his “decades-long commitment to the peaceful resolution of international conflicts”. No presidents have ever been older. Carter was the oldest living former US president, and none of his predecessors were older than him. He was preceded in death by his wife Rosalynn, with whom he was married for 77 years,

In November, he achieved his wish by voting by mail in the United States presidential election. Carter had previously stated that he will support Democratic contender Kamala Harris. Carter’s health has deteriorated recently; he turned 100 on October 1. He stopped his medical treatment around a year and a half ago, following many hospital stints, and went into home care.

The oldest living successor to Carter is the current incumbent, Joe Biden (20 November 1942), followed by Donald Trump (14 June 1946), George W. Bush (6 July 1946), Bill Clinton (19 August 1946), and Barack Obama (4 August 1961). Carter disclosed his cancer in 2015, but was able to conquer it. In recent years, he had been hospitalized multiple times owing to falls. Carter had often participated in politics since leaving the White House. Contrary to tradition, he had criticized successive presidents, including President-elect Trump.

Carter’s presidency was dominated by the 1979 hostage crisis at the US embassy in Tehran and the subsequent botched rescue effort. Following his administration, Carter and his wife Rosalynn established the Carter Centre in Atlanta to promote democracy, human rights, and economic growth. Even in his old age, he actively dedicated himself to humanitarian activity. Carter stated at a church service in his hometown of Plains in November 2019 that he was calmly anticipating his death. “I didn’t ask God to let me live,” he told me. “I prayed God to give me the right attitude about dying. And I realized I was entirely at peace with death.
