Moises Caicedo has made Ally McCoist eat his words after improving Chelsea’s form this season. The Ecuador midfielder came to Stamford Bridge for an initial £100 million in the summer of 2023, but had a dreadful debut season in west London, with McCoist claiming he was the league’s biggest flop. However, the former Scotland striker’s perspective has changed, as the player is currently performing at the peak of his game week after week.
Moises Caicedo has looked like a very different player this season; he appears to be a different person,” McCoist told talkSPORT BET. “It’s not just him; Romeo Lavia, who has joined Caicedo, is also of a different class. “It appears that Chelsea’s midfield has a new balance and attitude. I was properly critical of Caicedo last season; everyone knew he had talent when he arrived from Brighton, but he was unable to demonstrate it for some reason.
“I must praise him on his improvement in form; credit where it is due. Chelsea’s midfield looks terrific, which is quite refreshing to witness. The players deserve credit for turning things around, but so does [manager] Enzo Maresca, who has them playing some fantastic football.
McCoist has already lauded Caicedo this season, stating at the beginning of October: “I believed Chelsea utterly underachieved last year.
“I was really disappointed with the performance of two midfielders, Caicedo and [Enzo] Fernandez. I mentioned a few times that for a quarter of a billion pounds, I’m expecting a lot more. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that their performance has improved dramatically.” Last year, however, McCoist singled out Caicedo when questioned on talkSPORT whether Manchester United keeper Andre Onana could be considered a flop.
The Scot reflected: “He’s (Onana) nothing like the signing everyone expected him to be, but I’m not calling him the season’s flop so far.” I believe that’s just a little harsh.
