On November 4, 2024, smoke rises from Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki as seen in Klatanlo village, East Flores Regency, East Nusa Tenggara.

According to the disaster organization, an airport in Maumere, Flores’ second-largest town, has been temporarily shuttered, and a desk has been put up for residents to report any missing relatives. Last week, the volcano experienced repeated tremors and eruptions, spewing columns of ash between 500 and 2,000

In January, the mountain had multiple large eruptions, forcing authorities to evacuate at least 2,000 people. Indonesia, a huge archipelago nation, undergoes periodic eruptions as a result of its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an area of strong volcanic and seismic activity. Last December, an explosion of one of the country’s most active volcanoes, Mount Marapi in West Sumatra, killed at least 24 climbers, the majority of whom were university students. In May, more than 60 people died as heavy rains swept volcanic material from Marapi onto residential neighbourhoods, destroying homes. Mount Ruang in North Sulawesi province erupted more than a half-dozen times that month, forcing thousands of people to evacuate adjacent islands.
