Several Facebook posts claim that United States president Donald Trump has ordered an investigation into Nigerian president Bola Tinubu’s records at Chicago State University (CSU). The university is in the city of Chicago in the US state of Illinois. One post reads: “Breaking News: U.S. President Trump has ordered an investigation into Chicago State University following numerous reports questioning Tinubu’s graduation from the school.” Other posts making the same claim also quote Trump as saying: “I’ve instructed my team to investigate Tinubu’s records at Chicago State University. If they’re found to be hiding anything or involved in wrongdoing, the school will be shut down. Believe me, it will happen.”
Tinubu Certificate Scandal Tinubu’s educational qualifications were a source of contention when he campaigned as a candidate for the ruling All Progressives Congress in Nigeria’s 2023 presidential election. He submitted his credentials to the country’s Independent National Electoral Commission, indicating that he received a bachelor’s degree from CSU. His detractors, however, claimed that he stole the data of a female university graduate named Bola Tinubu.
The debate persisted even after the February 2023 presidential election. Attempts to get Tinubu’s records from the CSU before to the election failed. But has Trump authorized an inquiry into the data for 2025? We checked.
There is no evidence of the assertion. In October 2023, a US judge ordered the institution to give Tinubu’s records to the People’s Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar. Abubakar, who finished second in the election, unsuccessfully challenged Tinubu’s electoral victory in court. It seems quite doubtful that Trump will request a probe into the records in 2025. If Trump had issued such an order about the Nigerian president’s records, it would have gotten the attention of local and worldwide media. However, we found no reports about this. There is no evidence to support this allegation. This is false.
