On Tuesday (17), London Mayor Sadiq Khan unveiled plans to transform Oxford Street, the city’s world-famous shopping district, into a traffic-free pedestrian avenue. The proposals, sponsored by the new Labour government, aim to revitalise Oxford Street in order to promote London’s economic success and reclaim its place as the “leading retail destination in the world”. “Oxford Street is a world-renowned shopping destination, and we want it to remain that way. We can ensure it receives the necessary boost by collaborating with the Mayor and local leaders,” said Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner.

This initiative to reinvigorate Oxford Street will spur growth by creating new employment, increasing economic activity, and providing a much-needed boost to London’s nightlife economy.”

In collaboration with the Mayor and municipal leaders,

According to the mayor’s office, Oxford Street draws over 500,000 visitors every day and accounts for around 5% of the capital’s economic output, or £22.75 billion in 2019. It is home to various landmark stores, including Selfridges and John Lewis, as well as a major commercial hub. “Although Oxford Street remains an important element of the UK’s tourism, leisure, and retail offerings, earning cash for the exchequer that is reinvested throughout the country, it requires significant rehabilitation. Competition from online retailers and out-of-town shopping centres, the closure of flagship department stores, and the prevalence of ‘candy stores’ have put significant strain on Oxford Street’s attractiveness, while tourism numbers have not fully recovered since the pandemic,” according to an official statement.

The Mayor is determined to re-invent and change Oxford Street, collaborating with companies and Westminster City Council to build one of the world’s finest public spaces while making the area significantly greener, cleaner, and safer for everyone.” The mayor claims that his suggestions will provide a “much-improved” experience for shopping, residents, workers, and tourists who visit Oxford Street and the surrounding neighbourhood. The mayor’s office stated, with the support of government ministers, that Khan intended to establish a Mayoral Development Area to accelerate the regeneration of Oxford Street. As part of this, the mayor proposes that a Mayoral Development Corporation (MDC) be founded, which will have planning powers to provide the framework for the delivery of a world-leading programme that works for residents, visitors, and everyone.

The Mayor believes that his initiatives will transform Oxford Street into a more appealing and thriving modern retail and leisure destination, attracting more tourists, increasing footfall and spending. “It’s likely this would generate additional economic activity and increased tax revenue, as well as boosting London’s night-time economy, meaning that it can once again compete with other international high street destinations, such as Times Square in New York, the Avenue des Champs-Elysees in Paris and Las Ramblas in Barcelona,” said the mayor’s office.
