Navarro would be the second convicted criminal chosen to serve in Trump’s new cabinet. On Tuesday, the president-elect announced that he has chosen Charles Kusher, the father of his son-in-law Jared Kushner, to serve as the United States Ambassador to France. Kushner Sr. received a two-year prison sentence in 2005 after being convicted of unlawful campaign contributions, tax evasion, and witness tampering. He was a big donor to Trump’s 2016 campaign. Trump pardoned him in 2020.

In January, Navarro was sentenced to four months in prison after being convicted of contempt of Congress when he ignored two congressional subpoenas for testimony and records relating to Trump’s efforts to overturn in 2020.

Trump has also allegedly considered awarding Navarro federal clemency if he wins the White House and returns to power. According to a Republican source, the president-elect reportedly quipped that even if Navarro were waterboarded, he would never “rat on him.”

Now that Navarro has been released, Trump is following through on his pledges, appointing another supporter to the highest levels of his cabinet.
